Rooted & Regulated: The Breath-Based Sensory Kit for Kids

Regular price R 250.00 ZAR

Some children crash into everything and can't sit still. Others shut down and refuse to try new things. Both are telling you the same thing: their nervous system needs support.

The Rooted & Regulated kit uses the power of sucking and blowing to help children find their calm, their focus, and their balance, through play. Every straw and whistle in this set has been hand-picked by a pediatric occupational therapist for a specific regulatory purpose. This isn't just a toy. It's a therapeutic tool that looks like fun.

What's Included:

20 tools. One powerful system.

9 carefully selected straws, each chosen for a different level of resistance, texture, and regulatory effect:

  • Short straight straw: low effort, perfect starting point for sensitive children
  • Large diameter straw: easy airflow, builds early confidence
  • Standard straw:  familiar and manageable, a gentle step up
  • Double loop straw: encourages slower, more controlled breathing
  • Loop straw: longer air pathway, increases focus and breath control
  • Spiral calm straw: visual tracking support, slows breath and settles the mind
  • Silicone straw:soft and flexible, gentle for oral-defensive children
  • Sensory ribbed flexible straw: textured for increased lip awareness
  • Coffee stirrer: narrow resistance straw, deeply organising for busy systems
  • Character straw: playful and low-pressure, shifts focus from effort to fun
  • Metal straw: firm, cool, strong sensory feedback for seekers
  • Large diameter textured silicone straw, combines comfort with tactile input

11 whistles and blowing tools, each offering different levels of airflow, effort, and feedback:

  • Bird whistle: gentle entry tool, immediate sound reward
  • Party blower:channels big energy into purposeful blowing
  • Moustache whistle: encourages proper lip seal and rounded mouth position
  • Double cone air horn:  strong deep exhalation, activating for under-responsive systems (blow 3 times only)
  • Floating ball whistle:  sustained controlled airflow, organises beautifully
  • Slide/recorder: steady tone challenge, builds breath regulation
  • Bubbles:  the gentlest introduction to oral motor play

Plus the Lip Guide Disc:  a small yellow disc that attaches to any straw to encourage proper lip placement, slow chaotic blowing, and increase mouth awareness.

Please note: colours may vary.

What our OT Says:

The mouth is one of the richest sources of sensory input in the entire body. Sucking and blowing send powerful signals to the brainstem the part of the brain responsible for regulating arousal, attention, and calm. When a child blows slowly, they naturally create a longer exhale, which stimulates the vagus nerve and shifts the nervous system into rest-and-digest mode. When they suck hard through a narrow straw, they're giving their system the deep organising input it's been seeking.

The beauty of this kit is that it works for both ends of the spectrum. Sensory seekers, the kids who chew everything and can't sit still,  benefit from high-resistance, high-feedback tools that channel their energy. Sensory avoiders, the kids who gag easily and shut down, benefit from gentle, predictable, low-demand tools that build trust with oral input, one breath at a time.

There is no right or wrong way to use this kit. Start where your child is. Follow their lead. Keep it playful.
