Multiplication Number Set
Multiplication Number Set
Most children are introduced to multiplication through repetition chanting tables, drilling flashcards, filling in worksheets. But for many children, that approach doesn't stick, because it asks the brain to memorise something it hasn't yet understood. The Multiplication Number Set changes that. By working with physical number pieces, children build a concrete, visual picture of what multiplication actually means and that understanding becomes the foundation that carries them confidently into more complex maths.
The OT perspective: why hands matter in maths
As a paediatric OT, one of the things I see consistently is that children who struggle with abstract numeracy often flourish when maths becomes something they can touch and move. This set is a true multi-sensory maths manipulative it engages the hands, the eyes, and the brain simultaneously, which is exactly how learning embeds most deeply.
Manipulating the pieces builds fine motor precision and hand-eye coordination. Working systematically across a number grid supports left-to-right visual tracking a skill that transfers directly to reading. The predictable, structured format is naturally regulating, making this an especially valuable tool for children with attention difficulties, dyscalculia, or those who need a calm, clear task with visible progress.
Beyond the maths itself, this set quietly builds executive function: planning, sequencing, and working memory are all engaged as a child works their way through a times table. And because children can see exactly what they've done, the sense of mastery is immediate which is a far more powerful motivator than a tick on a page.
