Pencil Grips

How a child holds their pencil matters far more than most people realise and far more than most children's handwriting programmes address. A functional grip isn't just about neatness. It's about hand comfort, muscle efficiency, fatigue, and whether a child can sustain writing across a full school day without strain, avoidance, or frustration.

These pencil grips are a simple, affordable, and genuinely effective tool for supporting that.

What our OT says:

In my years of practice, pencil grip difficulties are one of the most common handwriting referrals I see. Children arrive with compensatory patterns,  thumbs wrapped tightly over the pencil, fingers bunched together, wrists twisted,  that have developed because their hands were never guided into a more functional position while habits were still easy to change.

The good news is that a well-chosen grip can do a remarkable amount of that guiding work. It provides a physical prompt for where each finger belongs, encourages an open web space between the thumb and index finger (which is critical for fluid movement), and reduces the excessive pressure that many children apply when they feel unstable in their grip. The result is more relaxed, controlled writing and often, a child who actually wants to sit and write, because it no longer hurts.

Different children need different grips. A child who wraps their thumb needs something different from a child whose fingers collapse. That's why we stock a wide range so that you, or an OT working with your child, can match the right tool to the specific pattern you're seeing.

What's included: Choose the style that suits your child:

Standard Grip A classic, universally fitting grip suitable for all hand sizes, for children and adults. A great starting point for children transitioning away from a fist grasp.

Beginner Grip Specifically designed to prevent the thumb from wrapping over the pencil shaft, while maintaining a healthy thumb web space. Ideal for early writers establishing their first functional grip.

Cross Guard Prevents thumb wrapping and maintains correct thumb web space. Well suited to children with a tendency to grip too tightly or collapse through the thumb.

Claw Grip (Large & Small) Naturally positions the hand into a functional tripod grasp with an open web space. Three shallow cups guide the thumb, index finger, and middle finger into exactly the right placement. Available in two sizes.

Fish Grip Finger guards hold fingers in the correct position, preventing them from crossing over. Works beautifully for both left- and right-handers. Made from soft, latex-free, phthalate-free material and comfortable for extended use.

Wrap Grip Ergonomically shaped to guide the thumb and all four fingers into correct position. Designed to reduce excessive force and reinforce proper placement through repetition and practice. Right-handed use only.

Stetro Grip A slimmer, more discreet grip with clear finger indentations. Ideal for older children or adults who want support without a bulky attachment. Automatically encourages a correct, natural grasp.

Ball Grip Ergonomic round shape that provides a gentle tactile cue for correct finger placement. Encourages a relaxed, open grip and reduces tension and fatigue during longer writing tasks. Suitable for children and adults with grip difficulties, coordination challenges, or handwriting fatigue.

Soft Sponge Grip Soft foam egg shape that encourages an open web space and supports a comfortable tripod grip. The gentle sensory feedback from the foam texture also helps children who benefit from proprioceptive input to regulate the pressure they're applying.

All grips fit standard pencils, pens, and crayons.
