What our OT says:
As an occupational therapist (OT) this is another favourite in my toolkit. Here is why we love this game:
- Fine Motor Skills Development: The activity of manipulating small wooden beads and placing them into specific slots on the board requires precise hand-eye coordination. This set also includes a wooden tweezer and spoon. Picking up beads with a spoon supports pronation and supination - this is the turning of the forearm, while the upper arm is kept still and is an important skill needed for activity of daily living. Individual finger movements and in-hand manipulation helps children develop and refine their fine motor skills, which are crucial for tasks like writing, drawing, and using tools.
- Visual Perception: Sorting and placing beads according to colour or pattern templates on the board enhances visual perception. Children learn to recognize and distinguish between different colours and shapes, which are essential skills for reading, writing, and interpreting visual information.
- Visual-Motor integration(VMI) - copying the activity cards on the board is developing a skill called VMI. VMI is about how well you can use your eyes and hands together to perform tasks that require both visual perception and motor coordination. This skill is essential for various everyday activities and academic tasks, such as writing, drawing, cutting with scissors, and playing sports.
- Motor Planning and Execution: Planning how to complete a pattern or design using the beads involves motor planning. Children strategize and execute movements to achieve a specific goal, improving their ability to plan and carry out tasks effectively.
- Attention and Concentration: Engaging with the game requires sustained attention and concentration. As children focus on matching colours or patterns, they enhance their ability to stay attentive to tasks, which is beneficial for learning and academic performance.
- Higher Cognitive Skills: The game promotes cognitive skills such as problem-solving and spatial reasoning. Children must think logically to complete the designs and patterns, enhancing their cognitive flexibility and ability to think critically.
- Creativity and Imagination: While following templates initially, children can also explore their creativity by inventing their own designs. This encourages imaginative play and self-expression, fostering overall development.
