What our OT says?

I am not an expert in Montessori teachings, but I have an interest in different teaching and learning approaches, as children differ and different approaches work for different children. Over the years I have learned a lot about the functional activities of Montessori and incorporate a number of these activities into therapy.

Montessori principles recognise that learning through purposeful, hands-on experiences with real-life tools is foundational for children’s development. By engaging in practical life activities, children become capable, confident, and well-prepared for success in all aspects of life. The use of real-life tools plays a fundamental role in fostering children’s development,  but why do Montessori principles emphasise this approach:

  • Real-Life Application: Montessori practical life activities mirror everyday tasks found in the home and community. Children engage in activities that are meaningful, purposeful, and relevant to their daily lives. By using real-life tools, they learn skills that directly apply to their experiences
  • Independence and Responsibility: Practical life tasks (such as pouring, spooning, washing, and dressing) empower children to be self-sufficient. Using real tools cultivates a sense of responsibility for themselves and their environment. Children gain confidence as they master skills essential for daily living.
  • Fine and Gross Motor Development: Handling real tools promotes fine motor skills (e.g., using tools for the Busy Bus).
  • Concentration and Coordination: Practical life tasks require focused attention and precise movements. Children develop concentration and hand-eye coordination through hands-on experiences.
  • Prepared Environment: Montessori classrooms provide a carefully prepared environment for practical life activities. Real tools are accessible, and children can work independently and at their own pace. Teachers guide and demonstrate tasks, allowing children to practice with confidence. This is why the busy bus is perfect for the Montessori classroom.
  • Life Skills and Confidence: Using real tools fosters essential life skills such as self-care and environmental care. Children build self-esteem and a sense of competence as they accomplish meaningful tasks.
