What our OT says?

I enjoy repurposing games in creative ways, extending their play value beyond the original instructions. By thinking outside the box, I can adapt games to suit various ages and developmental stages, breathing new life into them and maximising their potential. This approach not only prolongs the game's lifespan but also unlocks new opportunities for learning, growth, and fun!

Here are some other ideas for the balancing cactus:

  • Great for an Ice Breaker or Team Building game:
    • Divide players into teams (2 vs. 2 or 3 vs. 3).
    • Each team takes turns adding cactus branches to the main stack.
    • The goal is to build the tallest and most stable cactus tower.
    • Teams strategise together to find the best placement for each branch.
  • Colour Patterns:

    • Arrange the cactus branches by colour (e.g., green, pink, yellow).
    • Players take turns adding branches to the cactus, following a specific color pattern.
    • For example, players might alternate between green and yellow branches.
    • The challenge is to maintain the colour sequence while keeping the cactus balanced.
  • Blindfolded Challenge:

    • Blindfold one player (or all players) during their turn.
    • They must add a branch to the cactus without seeing where they place it.
    • This adds an element of surprise and requires careful estimation.
  • Time Pressure:

    • Set a timer (e.g., 1 minute) for each player’s turn.
    • Players must add as many branches as possible within the time limit.
    • The pressure adds excitement and encourages quick decision-making.
  • Obstacle Course:

    • Create an obstacle course around the cactus (use other toys or objects).
    • Players must navigate the course while holding a cactus branch.
    • If they drop the branch, they lose a turn.
    • This add a gross motor development angle to a board game.
  • Math Challenge:

    • Assign point values to different-sized branches (e.g., small = 1 point, medium = 2 points, large = 3 points).
    • Players take turns adding branches and keep track of their total points.
    • The winner is the player with the highest point total when the cactus falls.
  • Storytelling:

    • As players add branches, they create a collaborative story.
    • Each branch represents a different element (e.g., a leaf, a flower, a bird’s nest).
    • Players take turns adding to the story based on the branch they place.
  • Reverse Balancing:

    • Start with a fully built cactus tower.
    • Players take turns removing branches without toppling the cactus.
    • The last player to successfully remove a branch wins.
