Christmas is a season of stories: the ones we read, the ones we remember, and the ones children make up themselves. My Christmas Family is a set of seven small bendy dolls that lets those stories unfold on the playroom floor. Santa, Mrs Claus, two cheerful elves, and a family of three (a dad, a mum and a little baby in a Santa hat) are ready to visit the North Pole, deliver presents, or simply sit down together for Christmas lunch.

Each doll has a smooth wooden head, hands and feet. Its soft body bends, so arms can wave, hold hands and hug, and legs can sit or kneel. The felt and fabric outfits are full of small details for little eyes to notice: Santa’s yellow belt buckle, Mrs Claus’s green apron with its tiny heart, the elves’ striped stockings, and Mum’s blue polka-dot dress. The dolls are just the right size for a dollhouse, a play scene under the tree, or a small-world setup on the table.

This set doesn’t come with a script. A child might act out Christmas morning, invent a new adventure for the elves, or use the family dolls to talk through a visit to grandparents. Long after the decorations are packed away, the family dolls are still part of everyday pretend play, which makes this set a festive gift that lasts well beyond December.

What the OT Says

From an OT perspective, small bendable dolls like these are one of the most quietly valuable toys a child can own. Bending an arm or a leg into place usually means holding the doll steady in one hand while the other hand makes the movement. That is bilateral coordination at work: the two sides of the body doing different but cooperative jobs. Because the dolls are small, children naturally use their fingertips rather than their whole hand. This can support a refined pincer grasp, finger strength and the in-hand manipulation skills that later carry over into buttoning, using cutlery and controlling a pencil.

What I love most about a set like this is the language and storytelling it invites. With seven characters, children have to decide who is who, what happens next and how each character might feel. Planning and sequencing a story like this draws on early executive function and working memory skills. Narrating their play also builds vocabulary, sentence structure and the beginnings of storytelling, which is a foundation for early literacy.

Small family dolls are also a gentle tool for social-emotional learning. Children often use them to rehearse real-life experiences, such as a busy family gathering, travelling to see relatives, or a new baby joining the family. Acting these out through play can help them make sense of what to expect and how they feel about it, at a safe distance. The festive characters add a lovely layer of shared tradition, and the family dolls keep the set relevant all year round.

I would happily recommend My Christmas Family for home play, for gifting, and for clinical or classroom use, where it can support fine motor, language and social-emotional goals in a way that feels like pure play.
