What our OT says:
As an occupational therapist, I recommend utilizing a variety of strategies with the geometric shape sorter to promote learning and development:
- Initial Setup for Recognition: Begin by placing one piece of each shape on the board if the individual may have difficulty identifying shapes by their positions alone. This helps establish a starting point for understanding shape recognition.
- Tactile Identification: Enhance sensory and shape recognition skills by placing all pieces in a bag or container. Ask the individual to reach in without looking, feel a piece, and identify it as a circle, triangle, rectangle, or square before placing it on the board. This activity promotes tactile exploration and reinforces shape identification.
- Colour Sorting: Facilitate colour recognition and organization by sorting shapes on the tabletop by colour before placing them on the board. This activity supports visual discrimination and categorization skills.
- Focused Attention: If the child is easily distracted, cover the board except for one shape at a time to help maintain focus while stacking or arranging shapes. This reduces visual clutter and enhances concentration.
- Pattern Stacking: Encourage pattern recognition and sequencing by stacking all shapes of one type (e.g., all circles) and then asking the individual to stack other shapes using the same color pattern observed with circles. This promotes cognitive flexibility and visual-spatial reasoning.
- Verbal Learning: Aid in shape and colour name acquisition by verbally identifying each piece as it is placed on the board. This reinforces language development and strengthens association between verbal labels and physical objects.
- Sequential Sorting: Develop organizational skills by placing all pieces of one colour on the board first, then proceeding with another colour. This activity enhances categorization abilities and reinforces colour recognition.
- Following Instructions: Foster listening skills and task-oriented focus by placing pieces randomly on the tabletop and asking the child to follow instructions to place them on the board based on shape, colour, or both criteria. This encourages attention to detail and reinforces learning through active engagement.
