Wooden Apple Worm

Where did the worm go? There it is. Where did it go?

This simple game of peek-a-boo a worm threading in and out of a smooth wooden apple is one of those toys that seems almost too modest until you watch a baby with it. Then you understand immediately why it works.

The Wooden Apple Worm is crafted from solid wood, sized perfectly for little hands at 6 cm in diameter, and smooth enough to mouth, grip, bang, and carry safely. It is the kind of toy that earns its place on the shelf from around 6 months and stays there well into toddlerhood.

What's included:

  • 1 solid wooden apple (6 cm diameter) with threading worm.
  •  Made from natural wood. Safe for babies and toddlers.

What our OT says:

In the first year of life, some of the most important cognitive development happens through cause and effect,  a child learns that their actions produce results, that objects exist even when they cannot be seen, and that the world is predictable and safe to explore. The Apple Worm supports all of this beautifully.

Threading the worm in and out of the apple develops early hand-eye coordination and the kind of deliberate, focused grip that lays the foundation for fine motor control. The wooden surface provides excellent tactile feedback, which is important for sensory processing in young babies. And the simple in-and-out action, satisfying and repeatable is exactly the kind of purposeful play that builds concentration and cognitive persistence.

It is also a wonderfully calm, quiet toy. No batteries, no lights, no noise, just a child, a worm, and an apple, and as much time as they need.

How to play:

Thread the worm through the hole in the apple and pull it out the other side. Play peek-a-boo by hiding the worm inside and asking "where did it go?" Let your baby explore freely, mouthing, gripping, and turning the apple are all part of the play.

Other ways to play:

Hide the worm fully inside the apple and encourage your toddler to find and pull it out,  great for object permanence and problem-solving. Use during tummy time to encourage reaching and grasping. Let older toddlers practice threading the worm independently for fine motor challenge. Combine with other wooden toys for open-ended small world play.

Suitable for: 6 months and older. Always supervise babies during play.
