What our OT says about Geo Boards?
A geoboard is a mathematical manipulative used to explore basic concepts in plane geometry. It normally consists of a square board with pegs or nails set in rows and columns, around which rubber bands can be stretched to create various shapes. The Beginner Geoboard is a bit different and easier to use. Although the same board is used instead of elastics, sticks is included in this set, with designs to copy form cards.
Here are some more play ideas:
- Working with Shapes: The simplest use of a geoboard is to create different shapes. You can form squares, rectangles, triangles, and other polygons.Children can copy these shapes into a notebook, label them, and compare and contrast their properties (e.g., number of sides, vertices, size).
- Studying Angles: Geoboards are useful for exploring angles. Students can create shapes with right angles, acute angles, or obtuse angles. They can also make different types of polygons and analyse the angles created.
- Exploring Symmetry: Symmetry and angles go hand in hand. Children can create shapes that exhibit line symmetry (folded along a line) or explore rotational symmetry. For example, children can create a hexagon using triangles and observe its rotational symmetry.
- Investigating Fractions: By covering parts of the geoboard with shapes, students gain a hands-on understanding of fractions. They can use squares to cover quarters of the board or triangles to create eighths.
- Creating Pictures: Students can recreate images (such as cars, animals, or food) on the geoboard by following a pattern or design.

I got this together with the silicone beach set for my niece's 1st birthday. Although we are still in the heart of winter, these are great for bath time. At this age they love spending time in the bath and what's more fun than a watering can. Scooping and pouring, Feeling the water spray is a great sensory experience and I absolutely love the colours.
