What our OT says:

As an occupational therapist, I recommend this set without hesitation. Bath time is one of the richest developmental environments available to young children, warm water naturally relaxes the body, lowers sensory defensiveness, and creates an ideal window for building foundational motor and cognitive skills. The Splashy Seas set is cleverly designed to target multiple skill areas simultaneously, all while feeling like pure fun.

The fishing rod demands precise hand-eye coordination and tripod-like grasp, the same grip pattern that underpins pencil control and self-care tasks. As your child aims the hook at a floating creature, their visual system must track a moving target and send accurate signals to their hand muscles to adjust position, a skill that occupational therapists call visual-motor integration. This is one of the most important precursor skills for writing, drawing, and coordinated play.

Holding the rod steady with one hand while manoeuvring the hook with the other is a beautiful example of bilateral coordination, both sides of the body working together in a differentiated, purposeful way. Research consistently shows that bilateral integration activities are an indicator that both hemispheres of the brain are communicating effectively, laying the groundwork for crossing the midline and eventually establishing a dominant hand.

The varied sizes, shapes, and textures of each silicone sea creature also deliver rich tactile and proprioceptive input, supporting sensory processing development. And the act of fishing builds something just as important as motor skill: patience, attention, and persistence the executive function foundations that children will rely on throughout their school years.

Other Ways to Play:

  • Colour naming game: Ask your toddler to catch a specific creature by name or describe its colour, building vocabulary and listening comprehension.
  • Water table / sensory bin: Fill a plastic tub with water and use the set as a sensory bin play station perfect for warm-weather outdoor play or rainy days.
  • Counting & sorting: Place all creatures in the tub and challenge your child to catch them in a set order, count them aloud, or sort by size, great for early numeracy.
  • Pretend ocean storytelling: Use the characters to narrate an underwater adventure together, building imaginative play, narrative language, and turn-taking skills.
  • Squeeze & squirt: The whale doubles as a water squirter fill and squeeze to build hand strength and cause-and-effect understanding.
  • Turn-taking & siblings: Take turns fishing, one child holds the rod, the other places creatures building social-emotional skills like sharing and waiting.
