Play-Dough Scissors
Play-Dough Scissors
Before a child can cut paper, they need to cut something forgiving. Something that gives just enough resistance to build strength without the frustration of paper that crumples, slips, and tears in the wrong place.
Play dough is that thing. And these scissors are the perfect partner for it.
The Play-Dough Scissors are one of the best value fine motor tools in the shop and one of the most requested by the OTs and teachers who know them.
What's included:
1 plastic play-dough scissor in various colours. Measures 12 cm. Safe for children — blades cut dough only, not skin or paper.
What our OT says:
Cutting through soft dough is easier and far more enjoyable than cutting paper, so children can practise the open-and-close motion without the frustration. They do not even realise they are working, they are just snipping and playing.
From an OT perspective, the benefits are significant. The dough provides just enough resistance to build the hand strength needed for real scissors, while the cutting action itself develops the bilateral coordination required to hold material steady with one hand while cutting with the other. That two-handed working pattern is foundational, not just for scissor use, but for countless daily tasks like opening packaging, doing up buttons, and writing.
Play-dough scissors are also a wonderful way to introduce children who are anxious about scissors to the tool gradually and safely, in a context that feels purely playful. By the time they move to paper, the movement pattern is already familiar and the hands are already strong.
How to play:
Roll play dough into snakes, balls, or flat sheets and let your child snip freely. No instruction needed, just hand them the scissors and the dough and watch what happens.
Other ways to play:
Roll dough into a long snake and challenge your child to snip it into as many pieces as possible, great for counting too. Press cookie cutter shapes into flat dough and use the scissors to cut around the edges. Use alongside the Play Dough Accessories set for a full play dough activity station. Encourage older children to cut specific lengths or shapes for an added planning and precision challenge. Use in a therapy or classroom setting as a safe, low-stakes introduction to scissor use.
Suitable for: 2 years and older. Adult supervision recommended.
