Handy Scoops
Handy Scoops
The scoop is one of the most underestimated tools in early childhood play. It looks simple. But every time a child fills a scoop, steadies it, carries it, and pours it out, they are doing serious developmental work.
Handy Scoops by Learning Resources are designed with young hands in mind: easy-grip handles that fit small fingers comfortably, translucent scoops so children can see what they are collecting, and drainage holes that make them perfect for water play, sand, and sensory bins alike.
What's included:
1 x Handy Scoop. Each scoop measures 15 cm (L) x 5 cm (W). Translucent with easy-grip handles. By Learning Resources.
What our OT says:
Scooping is one of the foundational activities we return to again and again in occupational therapy and for good reason. The action of gripping a handle, loading a scoop, and carefully transferring material builds the proximal stability and distal mobility that children need for nearly every fine motor task.
In practical terms: the shoulder and elbow provide the stable base, while the wrist and fingers do the precise work. This separation of stability and mobility is exactly what children need to develop for scissor cutting, writing, and self-care tasks like spooning food or pouring a drink.
The drainage holes in the scoop add an extra dimension during water play, children can explore the concept of flow and volume while getting all the hand-strengthening benefits of the scooping action itself. A beautiful combination of sensory input and motor challenge in one simple tool.
How to play:
Use with a sensory tray, sand, water, rice, or any loose material. Scoop, transfer, pour, and repeat. Let your child lead, the repetition is the point.
Other ways to play:
Use alongside a Pour and Play Sensory Set for a complete transferring activity. Add to bath time for water pouring and measuring play. Use in a sand or mud kitchen outdoors for pretend cooking play. Set up a simple transferring challenge, scoop material from one bowl to another without spilling. Use with Colourful Droppers and sorting cups for a multi-tool sensory station. Race against a sand timer to scoop and transfer great for focus and challenge with older children.
Suitable for: 18 months and older.
