Easy Grip Scissors
Easy Grip Scissors
Some children are ready to cut, they want to, they're trying to but their hands just aren't strong enough yet to open traditional scissors on their own. For these children, the usual result is frustration, avoidance, and a growing reluctance around anything scissors-related. Easy Grip Scissors change that entirely.
What's included:
1 x pair of Easy Grip spring-loop scissors. (Size: approximately 20 cm.) Stainless steel blades with blunt safety tips. Spring-loaded loop handle reopens automatically after each cut. Suitable for left- and right-handed use. (Available in various colours.)
What our OT says:
The ability to open scissors is often the single biggest barrier to early cutting success and it's a muscle strength issue, not a skill issue. The child understands what cutting is. They know what they want to do. But sustaining the open-close motion repeatedly, while also holding paper steady with the other hand, while also tracking a line visually that's a lot to ask of a hand that hasn't built up the necessary strength yet.
Easy Grip Scissors remove the opening demand completely. The spring-loaded loop handle automatically reopens the blades after each squeeze, which means the child only needs to focus on one action: closing. That single change transforms the experience. Instead of fighting the scissors, they're using them successfully, independently, and with growing confidence.
From an OT perspective, this matters for several reasons. The repetitive squeezing action actively builds the hand strength and finger isolation needed for traditional scissors later. The automatic reopening also provides a clear proprioceptive rhythm squeeze, release, squeeze, release that supports motor planning and helps children internalise the movement pattern they'll eventually perform without any assistance. And because the scissors work for both left- and right-handed children, they're a genuinely versatile tool for home, classroom, and therapy settings.
These are not a crutch. They are a scaffold and a very well-designed one.
How to use:
Simply place the hand into the continuous loop handle and squeeze to cut. No thumb loop required the whole hand participates in the squeezing action, which reduces the fine motor demand and makes this accessible to younger children and those with low hand tone or reduced strength. Pair with play dough, paper strips, or straw lengths to practise snipping before moving on to craft cutting.
Progression tip: Once a child is cutting confidently with Easy Grip Scissors, transition them gradually to standard child scissors the strength and movement pattern will already be in place.
Suitable for: 2.5 years and older. Recommended for children developing scissor skills, children with low muscle tone, hypermobility, dyspraxia, or any child who finds traditional scissors difficult to open. Adult supervision recommended.
