Colourful Droppers

Small tool. Big developmental payoff.

A set of 6 colourful droppers might look simple, but the squeeze-and-release action that makes them so satisfying to use is exactly what young hands need. Every drop of water or paint transferred is a small act of muscle-building, coordination, and focus.

These are a staple in OT practice, and for good reason.

What's included:

  • 6 colourful paint droppers
  • Each measures approximately 6 cm.

What our OT says:

The pincer grip, thumb and index finger working together, is one of the most important skills a child develops before school. It underpins writing, buttoning, zipping, cutting, and countless other daily tasks. Droppers are one of the most natural ways to practise this grip because children are motivated by the outcome: they want to see the colour drop, mix, and spread.

Beyond grip, the controlled squeeze required to use a dropper strengthens the intrinsic muscles of the hand and develops the kind of bilateral coordination, where one hand holds while the other works, that children need throughout their school years.

How to play:

Fill a small bowl or cup with coloured water or diluted paint. Use the dropper to transfer liquid into an ice tray, onto paper, or into a sensory tray. Watch the colours drip, mix, and spread.

Other ways to play:

Use alongside a Pour and Play Sensory Set to add a transferring element. Drop coloured water onto coffee filters or paper towels to explore colour mixing. Use in the bath with plain water for mess-free practice. Set up a colour-sorting activity with a muffin tin and coloured water. Older children can use droppers for simple science experiments, exploring absorption, mixing, and cause and effect.

Suitable for: 3 years and older. Adult supervision recommended.
