What our OT says:

Yay, I just love gross motor activities as there is always a great element of fun and lots of laughter. This is so easy to pack and is often part of my OT kit.  Here are some of the benefits:

  • Balance and Coordination:
    • Spinning Motion: When children spin the hoop around their ankle, they must maintain balance and coordination. The circular motion challenges their equilibrium.
    • Proprioception: Feeling the hoop’s movement helps children understand their body position in space
  • Crossing the Midline:
    • Midline Crossing: As children hop over the spinning hoop, they naturally cross their midline (an imaginary line dividing the body into left and right halves).
    • Bilateral Integration: Midline crossing supports bilateral development by connecting both hemispheres. It enhances communication between the left and right sides of the brain.
  • Jumping Skills:
    • Timing and Precision: Hopping over the hoop requires timing and precision. Children learn to judge when to lift their foot and how high to jump.
    • Leg Strength: Repeated hopping strengthens leg muscles, promoting overall physical fitness.
  • Physical Activity and Fun:
    • Active Play: Ankle hoops encourage physical movement. Children engage in active play, which is essential for their health and well-being.
    • Enjoyment: The playful nature of hopping over the spinning hoop keeps kids motivated and excited.

  • Spatial Awareness:
      • Navigating Space: Children learn to gauge the hoop’s size and adjust their movements accordingly.
      • Body Awareness: They become more aware of their own body dimensions and limitations.

  • Social Interaction:
        • Group Play: Ankle hoops can be used in group activities. Kids take turns, cheer each other on, and learn social skills.
        • Cooperative Play: When children play together, they negotiate space, share, and collaborate.

  • Variety and Creativity:
          • Multiple Ways to Play: Besides hopping, kids can experiment with different movements – skipping, twirling, or even dancing with the hoop.
          • Imagination: Ankle hoops become magical portals – stepping over them can transport children to imaginary worlds.

Ankle Hoops

We bought 3 Ankle Hoops for a Christmas party where the children exchanged presents. The Ankle Hoops were a winner and the parents tried to master it as well! The older children of age 7 and up could master it better than the younger ones, but all ages seemed to like Hoops. I am satisfied with my purchase.
