These Montessori dressing frames take each part of that process and turn it into something a child can practise calmly, without the pressure of a morning rush. Each sturdy wooden frame holds two fabric panels joined by one type of fastening, such as buttons, a zip, snaps or laces. Your child can open and close it again and again, at their own pace.

The frame rests flat on a table or the floor, so the fastening sits right in front of your child where they can see it and use both hands freely. That is much easier than working on a button under their own chin. Once they feel confident on the frame, they often want to try the same skill on their own coat, school bag or shoes. That moment of “I did it myself” is what these frames are designed for.

Made from wood with durable, securely stitched fabric, the frames are built for years of repeated use. They are a natural fit for home, classroom or therapy room, and they can be passed on to a younger sibling. Quietly practical, beautifully simple and genuinely useful, they are exactly the kind of toy we love to have on our shelves.

What’s Included

1 x Large button frame

1 x Zip frame

1 x Snap / press-stud frame

1 x Lacing frame

1 x Buckle frame

1 x Hook-and-eye frame

1 x Bow-tying frame

1 x Velcro frame

Total: 7 frames
Dimensions: [approx. 30 x 30 cm per frame]
Recommended age: 3 years+ (simpler frames such as large buttons, Velcro and zips may suit confident 2½-year-olds with adult support)

What the OT Says

As an occupational therapist, I see dressing as one of the most meaningful everyday skills a child works towards. It is also one of the most demanding. Fastening a single button asks a child to stabilise the fabric with one hand while the other hand pushes, pinches and pulls. That makes it real bilateral coordination work, with each hand doing a different but complementary job. It also draws on a refined pincer grasp, finger isolation and in-hand manipulation, which is the ability to move a small object within the fingers of one hand.

What I value most about dressing frames is how they reduce the load on the child. When a fastening is on their own body, a child has to work partly out of sight and coordinate around their own chest or feet. A frame on the table removes that challenge. The child gets clear visual feedback, both hands are free, and their full attention can go to the motor sequence itself. Because each frame isolates one fastening, the task stays manageable. The child can repeat it, refine it and feel genuinely successful before moving on.

Depending on which frame they use and how, these frames can support fine motor control, hand strength, hand-eye coordination, bilateral coordination and motor planning. They also support executive function skills such as sequencing, attention and persistence, because a child has to remember the steps and keep trying when a button doesn’t go through the first time. Lacing and bow-tying frames add more complex sequencing and working memory demands, so the set naturally grows with your child.

There is also a quieter benefit that I see often. Children who feel more capable with everyday tasks tend to approach them with more confidence and less frustration, and that supports social-emotional development too. Every child develops these skills in their own time, and there is no single right order to work through the frames. I would happily recommend these for home use, Montessori and preschool classrooms, and therapy practice.
